Buzzfeed recently shared a 2017 FiveThirtyEight article about the most banned songs at weddings. While it’s entirely up to the couple, some songs were much more worthy of banning than others. Some even seemed unfairly maligned. We broke down what needs to be banned, and what you can keep.
When Panic! At The Disco released A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out in 2005, it was a breath of fresh air to the alternative/emo/pop-punk scene that was spilling into the mainstream. Fever was a rock record that also felt like a work of theater, carnival sideshows and electronica, but what’s most incredible is P!ATD couldn’t follow it up for another decade. Pretty Odd, the group’s last record with all four founding members, was a brilliant work of Beatles fetishism that couldn’t appeal to a large part of the fanbase. Vices & Virtues felt like Fever lite. Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die served as an enjoyable transition to 2016’s Death of a Bachelor, an album that may be the group’s best and the only one that feels as fully realized as Fever. Bachelor was the group’s most exhilarating release in over a decade, and that leads to why Pray for the Wicked is such a profound disappointment. The Grammys are usually predictable, but not painfully so, like this year. This has been a year with a lot of heartache, and after the Grammys have blown it in nominating rock artists of consequence or giving the album of the year to an undeserving pick two years in a row, it’s hard not to get a little cynical, but here are my best guesses of who will win and should win:
When I was first late to the Eminem fandom, I really went hard for Em’s technical skill, which was perfect, because he was about to put out Recovery. Very shortly after, I was drawn to the Slim Shady persona that spoke to the angry, young man that I was. Now, I could take or leave them both. Some of the ~inspirational~ Eminem songs hold up better than I thought they would, and the better Slim Shady tunes were ever so self-aware. I don’t care about Eminem as passionately as I once did. He’s in the same folder as Marilyn Manson: take a look when there’s something new, but it’s probably not good. Revival was unsurprisingly bad, but offensively so in its length and jingoism. To me, The Grammys are the Super Bowl. I always want to gamble on it. I usually know what’s going to happen. I’m glued to the TV for hours, and I get drunk while doing it. Unlike the Super Bowl though, the person who wins is either met with indifference or excitement, rarely anger. This year, BurgerADay are laying out the pics for who will win versus who should win. Check out our picks, and either way, just remember it’s much more important than the Patriots and Falcons. No one’s deflating these balls.

I may have been late to the party for a long time, but at the tail end of 2016, I listened to Lemonade, and it’s pretty damn great. Beyoncé is completely worthy of all the praise she’s gotten for this album. As most of the best albums of the year, Bey mixed the political with the personal, and the record can transition from an emotional gut-punch like on “Pray You Catch Me” or “Don’t Hurt Yourself” to a genuinely fun as hell hype song like “Formation.” There may be a little protest to the politicization of Beyoncé, but as someone who’s never been on board with her as a simple pop-artist, she’s certainly left a great impression this year.
The festival will take place over the weekends of April 14-16 and April 21-23, and it features some of the most popular artists of 2015 and 2016. Some lesser known treats are Preoccupations, Ezra Furman, Car Seat Headrest, Mitski, Sampha, and many others.
There was a lot of good music that came out in 2016, and it’s terrible. Of course, no one is complaining about the excellent tunes, but the greater amount of good music, the harder it is to keep up with. There’s so much music that you couldn’t possibly give everything a thorough listen; therefore, here are some of the albums that won’t make my best-of list and may be on my honorable mentions list, but I still plan on giving a much more complete listen to in the end of 2016 and in 2017.
The 2017 Grammy Nominees have been announced! Some interesting choices include Chance the Rapper as best new artist, Beyoncé’s nomination for best rock performance, Twenty-One Pilots in both rock and pop categories, and just seeing Bowie, Panic! At the Disco, Weezer, blink-182, Bon Iver and Radiohead nominated in one year are all pretty incredible. Check them all out below! Continue reading →
