Comedy can often feel like you’re fraying at the seams. Those moments can be painfully awkward, but they can also be the most rewarding. This ranges from the masochistic joy that comics take from seeing their peers struggle to get an audience back, or it can be engaging to see someone having a mental breakdown onstage, in the same way that it’s exciting to watch a car-wreck. Most comics will tell you that despite the hard times, it’s usually a matter of actually getting up there and running material that helps keep you sane. Sometimes, I tend to forget that the guys in The National are both thoughtful and innovative musicians. Despite being a group that shifted the sound of indie rock, it’s easy to think they’ve mostly done the same thing on every album. Remember on Recovery when Eminem straight up said, “Them last two albums didn’t count/Encore, I was on drugs. Relapse, I was flushin’ ‘em out?” While Recovery may not be the definitive album in Marshall Mathers’ catalogue, it was really great to see Eminem own up to two albums that were really just subpar, and that album was followed by Eminem’s best album in 11 years. Revival was a serious misstep for Eminem, and while there’s a certain excitement and viciousness in Kamikaze, it’s an even bigger one. Continue reading
This is not the folktronica reinvention we were promised. Justin Timberlake’s Man of the Woods was hyped to sound like it was his 22, A Million. To be fair, this was all speculation; all we had confirmed was that this was going to be a return to Timberlake’s Tennessee roots. In a sense, it succeeds. JT has gone bro-country; save for some of the extra synth’s thrown in. Man of the Woods is an earnest attempt at artistry, but it sees Timberlake slouching into his iconic status. Continue reading
Despite deaths and elections, 2016 was an excellent year for music. There were so many great albums that it was hard to keep up. That being said, it’s time for the most controversial list, where the top 10 are decided. Take a deep breath.
10. Panic! At The Disco-Death of A Bachelor
When A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out first arrived in 2006, Panic! At the Disco was the most exciting mainstream rock band in the world. Pretty. Odd. in retrospect, isn’t a bad record, but it doesn’t have the same life that Fever does. In fact, the band didn’t even scratch that excitement until the release of the song “This is Gospel,” but on Death of a Bachelor, Brendon Urie sounds refreshed. The faux Sinatra songs like “Impossible Year” are irresistible, but he really shines on the songs that serve as bangers. “Don’t Threaten Me With A Good Time” or “LA Devotee” are genuine pop hits, and P!ATD’s best records are still to come if Urie can keep up this output. The 2017 Grammy Nominees have been announced! Some interesting choices include Chance the Rapper as best new artist, Beyoncé’s nomination for best rock performance, Twenty-One Pilots in both rock and pop categories, and just seeing Bowie, Panic!
