The Best Albums of 2016: Honorable Mentions
As album-of-the-year season approaches, we’ve been reflecting on the music we’ve heard this year. While a more formal list is coming, these items are all honorable mentions for a number of reasons. While it may just be that we felt our list was better, for many of these albums it has to do with the fact, we just didn’t get to spend as much time as we would have liked with them. These are still some of the best records of the year, in no particular order.
Chance the Rapper-Coloring Book
Chance’s third mixtape is one of his strongest. With gospel-infused hip hop, he brought some of the best feel-good songs of the summer.

Green Day perform “Bang Bang” at the AMA’s with “No Trump!” Chant
Billie Joe Armstrong has been incredibly outspoken about his disdain for the President-Elect. Green Day began a chant saying “No Trump. No KKK. No Fascist USA” in reference to “Born to Die” by MDC. Green Day will be touring the US next year with Against Me!
Mike Pence Called Out and Booed at ‘Hamilton’ Performance
Vice President-Elect Mike Pence was called out during tonight’s performance of the Broadway musical Hamilton. Pence was booed as he entered the performance, and lead actor, Brandon Victor Dixon, had some choice words for Pence after the performance in the above video.
PWR BTTM show protested by Christian Hate Group
Last night, PWR BTTM’s show in Jackson, Mississippi received protests from a Christian organization. The band tweeted the above photo with the text “this is happening at the show tn. Kate McKinnon performed Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” to open Saturday Night Live
Following weeks of skits satirizing Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, Kate McKinnon opened the show with a simple tribute to both Leonard Cohen and Clinton. McKinnon ended her performance saying, “I’m not giving up, and neither should you.” It was a sobering moment before an excellent show.
Run For Cover Records places entire discography up to pay-what-you want, proceeds going to Planned Parenthood
The Boston-based label has put up their entire discography on bandcamp so listeners can pay what they want. RFC will also match donations up to $5000, and the proceeds will go to Planned Parenthood.
